Front Pocket Luggage: A Suitcase Designed For Modern Travel Efficiency

Lying a suitcase flat on the ground at the airport security checkpoint and frantically rummaging through it to find the laptop tucked away at the very bottom-this is a scene all too familiar to countless business travelers. But a design called Front Pocket Luggage is fundamentally transforming this experience. As Daehwan Kim, Senior Product Designer at Briggs & Riley, explains, Front Pocket Luggage addresses the biggest pain point for hard-shell suitcase users while traveling-the ability to access frequently used items in crowded airports without having to open the main compartment. At the heart of this innovation is a separate vertical opening or external pocket on the front of the suitcase, placing frequently used items-such as laptops, ID cards, and power banks-within easy reach, allowing for quick access without having to lay the entire suitcase flat.
Traditional suitcases are designed with the logic that all items are stored centrally in the main compartment, requiring the entire suitcase to be opened to access any single item. Front Pocket Luggage rethinks the functional positioning of luggage based on user behavior. When designing its Tank Series Front Pocket, the 4MYTU brand observed real-life scenarios-such as security checkpoints, hotel rooms, and overhead compartments-to create a structured, fully opening front storage compartment that functions much like a well-organized workspace. The NORTVI Front Pocket carry-on suitcase also won the 2026 Red Dot Design Award thanks to this design philosophy; the jury described it as "a suitcase that is both thoughtfully designed and highly appealing in terms of both design and usability."

Core Advantages: A Triple Balance of Efficiency, Space, and Security

The core advantage of Front Pocket Luggage is first and foremost reflected in its efficiency during transit. Actual test data shows that during airport security checks, retrieving electronic devices from a Front Pocket suitcase takes only about 45 seconds, whereas traditional suitcases require being fully opened and rummaged through, taking an average of up to 3 minutes. In confined spaces such as hotel rooms or high-speed train compartments, the front-pocket design allows users to retrieve items without fully opening the suitcase, occupying only half the floor space of a traditional side-opening suitcase.
Secondly, there is the optimization of space utilization. Early front-pocket designs sacrificed main compartment capacity due to mechanical constraints, but the superior designs of 2026 have resolved this issue through "optimized compartment thickness" and "restructured storage logic." The front pocket utilizes the suitcase's own depth to create compartments, moving flat items such as laptops and documents from the main compartment to a separate compartment, allowing the main compartment to focus on storing clothing. As a result, the actual space utilization is approximately 15% higher than that of traditional suitcases.
Furthermore, safety and durability are equally prioritized. Most Front Pocket Luggage models are equipped with TSA-approved locks, ensuring convenient security screening and the safety of personal belongings during international travel. The interior features a smart divider lining made from recycled PET fabric, and the laptop compartment includes reinforced protection.
In 2026, Front Pocket Luggage is rapidly transitioning from a cutting-edge concept to the mainstream market. Since its launch in October 2025, the black version of the Briggs & Riley Sympatico Front Pocket has sold out online. The 4MYTU Tank Series won the Bronze Award at the 2025 IDEA Design Awards for its front-pocket design. Brands such as Xiaomi, Samsonite, and TUMI have also successively launched front-pocket styles. Behind this trend lies consumers' growing demand for "efficient travel"-luggage is no longer merely a container for belongings, but a key tool for enhancing travel efficiency.
